Harold Pinter, the British playwright whose gifts for finding the ominous in the everyday and the noise within silence made him the most influential and imitated dramatist of his generation, died on Wednesday. He was 78 and lived in London. The cause was cancer, his wife, Lady Antonia Fraser, said.

Pinter learned he had cancer of the esophagus in 2002. In 2005, when he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, he was unable to attend the awards ceremony but delivered an acceptance speech from a wheelchair in a recorded video.

In more than 30 plays written between 1957 and 2000 and including works like ‘The Birthday Party,’ ‘The Caretaker,’ ‘The Homecoming’ and ‘Betrayal’-he captured the anxiety and ambiguity of life in second half of the 20th century.

An actor, essayist, screenwriter, poet and director as well as dramatist, Pinter was also publicly outspoken in his views on repression and censorship, at home and abroad. He used his Nobel acceptance speech to denounce US policy, saying the US had not only lied to justify waging war against Iraq but that it had also “supported and in many cases engendered every right-wing military dictatorship” in the last 50 years.

His political views were implicit in much of his work. Though his plays deal with the slipperiness of memory and human character, they are also almost always about the struggle for power. The dynamic in his work is rooted in battles for control, turf wars waged in location that range from working class boarding houses to upscale restaurants.

A paragraph consists of three elements

Topic sentence

The topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph. It introduces the main idea of the paragraph. It should briefly summarize the main idea of the paragraph too so that you can indicate to the reader what is your paragraph about.

Supporting sentences

They come after the topic sentence, making up the body of a paragraph. They give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph. In these sentences you you should focus on giving supporting facts, details, and examples.

Closing Sentence

The closing sentence is the last sentence in a paragraph. It restates the main idea of your paragraph.

Le Clezio, 68, published his first novel-Le process-verbal (the interrogation) in 1963. In the early years of is career, he was regarded as a writer who sought new narrative methods, influenced by travels across the globe, including Panama, where he lived with an Indian tribe.

The announcement followed days of argument over remarks by Swedish Academy’s permanent secretary, Horace Engdahl, suggesting that US writers were too much under sway of American popular culture to quality for the prize.

I recently came across the article at cnn which lists billionaires starting with richest man on the earth Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolikiah Muízaddin Waddaulah who keeps an air conditioned stable for his ponies.

This article features many Nouveau Riche personalities whose stories of success are breathtaking.

Here are few examples that I could extract.

Expression should be effective and exact.  Essay writing is a very difficult job for many people. But it can become easy and enjoyable if you know how to approach

There cannot be any standard way of writing an essay. But following points  would help you in  developing your own style.

Brainstorm

Dwell on the topic that you have chosen till the time you grasp it fully. Understand its context and concerns.

Start writing down any keywords or phrases associated with the topic that comes to your mind. It may even be a weirdest idea.

Classify and Systemic Thoughts

Start linking your random thoughts and classify them in different groups. Arrange these groups in an orderly fashion so that there is logical progression of ideas and each paragraph is linked to the preceding and the following paragraphs.

Introduction

Give your essay a logical introduction.  The introduction should set the pace and flat off the discussion.

Conclude Well

The concluding remark should be really powerful and effective. It should give a sense of completion and leave the examiner satisfied.

Keep It Lucid

The language of the essay should be simple yet  powerful and effective. Choice of words, diction, phrases, idioms etc. should be appropriate.

While internet has made publishing simple it has also resulted in lot of trash being published. People have always been averse to bad writing. Therefore you need to have good writing skills to get noticed and become successful.

I my constant effort to improve my writing, I looked for tips for writing good. Ha! Even this contained a lot of trash. Here is what I found reasonable, workable and worth trying. They come with dash of me. So please bear that.

Be A Voracious Reader

Writing is a creative activity.  But apart from being creative genius, you need to equip yourself with language, style and craftsmanship. Moreover, new thoughts and ideas that mind needs to generate are easily proviided by the input from boooks, magazine and other content media.

Be A Prolific Writer

If you want be a runner, you run. If you want to be a writer, you write. It is as simple as that. You must write on daily basis. Devote the best possible time in the day for developing this skill. You have to keep on writing to brush up your skills.

Get Guided

If you think you lack in some area of writing, you can take courses to develop that. You can choose between an online course or a classroom course. Take whatever suits you. But one thing, you need to participate fully to take advantage of the course. Course itself would be nothing if you do not involve yourself.

Join Forums

Forums are great places for brainstorming and get answers to your queries. You can ask question about a thing that is bothering you and  you can get new ideas to write and ask for critique of your work. There are many forums for writers available on the net. Writers.com and writers.net are two forums which you can start with.

Get Critiques of Your Work

If you are just writing just for yourself then it is a different thing. But if you are reading this article, most likely you are writing for an audience. You can improve on your work by asking for review of your work. You can ask your friends if they are interested.  Otherwise forums are great places to ask for construcive criticism.

Keep Record

Keep a record of your work. Keeping a small diary helps you to jot  down ideas as they come. Ideas can come anywhere, any moment and they fade away  if you do not write them. Be prepared. A digital recorder is also a good method to record your ideas.

As far as possible do not leave your work unfinished. If you have to write the outline for future writing.

Most importantly, do not stop your quest for immprovement. We are never talented enough to stop practising.
